Gluten-Free Roasted Thanksgiving Turkey

Gluten-Free Roasted Thanksgiving Turkey---

Turkey is the star of the Thanksgiving meal, no dish has more riding on it for a successful holiday occasion.  Isn't turkey gluten free? The answer is yes and no....turkey is naturally gluten free, but it is good to know that many store-bought frozen turkeys can possibly have hidden gluten in them from the injected basting or marinades. These ingredients are not necessarily listed on the packaging, and if in doubt the company can be called. To be safe,we roasted a turkey specifically designated  "gluten-free" on its packaging.

Let's make some roasted turkey!

INGREDIENTS:

  • 1 (any size) whole, bone in skin on turkey, (fresh or frozen)- we used Riverside 18 lb. turkey--it has GF on the package
  • 4 cups water
  • 1 cup salt
  • 1/4 cup pepper

DIRECTIONS:

  • Preheat oven to 325 degrees F. Position oven rack in the bottom part of the oven.
  • Place turkey in kitchen sink, remove from bag. Remove the liver, neck, giblets, and gravy packet. (We cut the excess fat from the outside the cavity of the turkey).  Wash inside and outside with cold water.

  • Place turkey in roasting pan, pour 4 cups of water in pan. Salt and pepper inside of turkey. Heavily salt the outside of the turkey and rub salt in. Rub the pepper in next.

  •  Cover with roasting pan lid or with aluminum foil and place in oven....and yes, this is the ugliest roasting pan---ever! The rule of thumb is to roast for 13 to 15 minutes per pound, or until temperature is at least 165 degrees (measure this in the thickest part of the turkey's thigh). However, we had a cheat sheet on our packaging that made this easy without the math.

VIOLA!

We have delicious roasted turkey. Remove from oven and place on a platter or a cutting board. Carve the turkey the same way that you carve a roasted chicken.

Remember, the leftovers are delicious as a turkey sandwich.
